The Third Sunday after Pentecost
Sermon
We follow Christ, no matter what
While on the road, Jesus encounters three men who enthusiastically volunteer to be His
disciples. But there’s a catch. The first doesn’t understand what he’s getting himself into,
the second wants to wait till his father dies, and the third want to say goodbye to his
family first. Jesus’ response to these seemingly reasonable requests may strike us as being
a bit harsh, but there’s a very important truth here. Jesus will brook no rivals. If we are to
follow Jesus, there can’t be anything that takes precedence over Him. If He is our king,
then we cannot have divided allegiance. This is nothing more than the first
commandment applied to Christ. We fear, love, and trust in Him above all things. Because
in the end, nothing else can be our king.
