The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
Sermon
No other word from heaven but Jesus.
Our Lutheran Confessions use Jesus’ words in our text, “He who hears you, hears Me.” (The
Apology to the Augsburg Confession: Concerning Ecclesiastical Power) Our confessions
say that Christ wants to assure us, that the Word is effective when human beings deliver it
and that we should not look for another word from heaven. Our confessions also say
that we should believe the voice of the one absolving us no less than we would believe a
voice from heaven. Our confessions go on to say that we should not be offended by the
unworthiness of ministers because they do not represent their own persons but Christ.
