7th Sunday after Epiphany
Sermon
Our Father is Merciful
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”
Probably the most-quoted but least-loved words of Jesus.
"Love your enemies" always sounds good in theory, until your enemy is pointing a gun at you or spreading rumors behind your back or trying to get you fired. This kind of mercy is hard, and probably seems foolhardy. Why would you offer your tunic to someone who already stole your cloak?
But divine mercy always looks foolish. When they struck our Lord's cheek, He offered them His back as well.
He died for those who hurt him the most,
us.
