The Republic of Ghana which occupies 92,000 square miles (about the size of Indiana) in West Africa between Ivory Coast, Togo and the Gulf of Guinea. It is home to 20 million people. There are 100 ethnic groups, and while English is the “official” language, there are 72 distinct language groups.

In 1900, less than 5 percent were Christian, but by 2000 that number had increased to 64 percent. Muslims account for 21 percent. Of the 72 languages, only 8 have the Bible in their language.

The Rev. Dr. Paul Koffi Fynn is president of The Evangelical Lutheran

Church Of Ghana (ELCG). The ELCG was established by LCMS

missionaries in 1958. Today it has 200 congregations, 29,000 baptized

members and 21 ordained pastors.

Roughly 600 plus attended the ELCG National Youth Assembly in 2005. The CLEF president conducted the Bible studies.

CLEF efforts in West Africa are based out of Ghana. Nevertheless, the CLEF has renewed contacts with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sudan and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya and continues work in southern Africa as well (Republic of South Africa and Madagascar).
